In March 2018 we commissioned a survey of education professionals to find out how preparations for the GDPR were progressing in schools, colleges and universities across the North West.
Some of the results can be seen below:
Surprisingly there was still a number of the headteachers, governors, IT managers, security managers and facility managers we interviewed who hadn’t heard of the legislation at all. A little concerning as it’s now come into force. For those who had heard of the legislation the vast majority needed more information on the impact.
Most were also struggling to evidence privacy by design – for example showing that data protection is a key consideration during any project and when processing personal information.
Just over half of those who work on access control systems have no training in data protection. This is a concern, as an access control system contains Personally Identifiable Information.
So, what is this telling us? The education sector, through this survey, has highlighted a need for training to help organisations get to grips with the requirements of the GDPR.
